23 June 2010 is the 253 years anniversary of the Battle of Plassey. It was on this day in 1757 that the East India Company conquered Bengal under the leadership of Robert Clive. It was also the beginning of the British Indian Empire.
The main aim of the annual conference is to encourage and facilitate an increase in the study of history that links Britain with Bengal / Bangladesh. The particular focus of the conference is on issues linked to or arising from the British conquest of Bengal and the operation of the East India Company. Brick Lane Circle organizes the annual conference within a community setting, designed to involve people from all walks of life and backgrounds to engage in research, discussion, sharing and dissemination of knowledge.
The 2010 conference has a number of distinguished scholars in the field, who cover an interesting range of subjects. It is a rare gathering of scholars looking at the historical roots of Britain’s links with Bengal / Bangladesh.
