The Esperanto dream would have had all European nation states communicating in a language concocted out of all of them. When I did my first ever Saturday job at WHSmiths in the 80s they sold phrasebooks of it. I can’t imagine there being much demand for the things now seeing as a bastardised English performs this function of being language of communication. A longer post by me including the perils of being a Euro-youth is here at the fine international relations site of the LSE.

The picture is of the Sibellious national memorial monument in Helsinki in case you didn’t know already.
