Did a lecture on urban relations this morning which included reference to Wilmott and Young’s seminal sociological study “Family and Kinship in East London” – based in Bethnal Green. I’m trying to attach a slide here (if it works). Co-author Micheal Young went on to co-author Labour’s 1945 manifesto. The book is relevant today for lots of reasons – as is the manifesto. I’m also chuffed to bits that last night Bethnal Green North ward Labour Party chose to nominate me as their woman candidate in the ongoing parliamentary selection process there, so not only have I been there loads but even when teaching over in Kingston, the place has never been out of my mind. Thanks to party members. Anyone who doesn’t know the book – go seek.
