Interesting debate here at Labourhome, hot on the heels of a post by Will Parbury the day after the mayoral results, ponders on who the next Labour mayoral candidate should be. Iain Dale has even linked to it (although he doesn’t recognise the suggestion he picks was a joke). It was sad to see a picture of Ken forlornly carrying a plastic Thomas the Tank Engine trainset out of his office in the Mail on Sunday last week but a suggestion from Alex Hilton (all round affable guy and PPC for Kensington) is that should be Kon not Ken next time ie Konnie Huq. All this speculation less than a week after Livingstone’s electoral demise. Indecent haste?

What are the requirements for being London Mayor? Common sense, good ideas, good management skills, good leadership skills or is it just down to popularity and personality?

Would your sister actually be prepared to ditch the battered remains of her neutral image and come out on the left?
And what are the chances of you actually getting a seat by then to fight her corner if she did?
It would take more than musical musings to pull it off…

Tim: not being the incumbent could also be a qualifcation… which BoJo will not have on his side next time.
ac256: Konnie is weirdly now described as “ex Blue Peter” presenter now - as recently as 2 days ago on C4 News when the torch footage was dragged out again, maybe thus she is shorn of the impartiality requirement
Alex: doh, sorry. If I correct it, does it make you look idiotic rather than me?

Rupa,
You say that the suggestion on the Labour Home thread of Lee Jasper as mayoral candidate was a joke. Sadly not. It was treated as such by another correspondent so the original poster “BritishAsian” defended his choice thus:
“Then should the fightback not start there? Labour should not shrug and accept this tag for even one important Labour figure. If he is tarred then so are all others. If we “rehabilitate” Lee (only in perception not fact) it will be a big win for us.
Look at the late contest. Johnson was a flawed candidate too but as you say his candidacy somehow resonated. By 2012 there is a good chance that any Conservative government will be mired in deep unpopularity from the cuts it must make. With that backdrop I think any recognisable Labour candidate will win just as I think any Conservative would probably have won this time (or even done better possibly).
Let us not forget how close this race was. Livingstone lost by less than what the BNP polled. The BNP I am telling you! We can win those people back sure.”
Notice this chap recognises that the Conservatives will win the election and “must make” cuts. Yes, because this government has spent every last bean and as usual the Tories will have to come in and clean up the mess. Just like the last time…
Rupa, your lot at Labour Home are with the fairies. Admit it.
