It is a shame that the memorial wasn't in Bristol, as I would be able to blame Bristol City Council... You see, the imbeciles at the council [no, I'm not being unfair, they just took 8 years to uncover a person who'd passed away in their sheltered housing] couldn't decide what to do when some Banksy graffiti was found on the walls of a prominent building near the council house.

Now I am by no means antipathetical to Banksy - he makes some good political points. But the council decided to run a facile 'web-poll' which was about as unscientific as most other ones, where '95% of the people' [sic] 'decided' that the 'art' [surely 'graffiti'?] should be left in situ.

So I'm afraid that it does rather prevent them, by the doctrine of estoppel, from whingeing to much about kids putting graffiti on other buildings - after all those kids could argue that 95% of their friends are in favour of it being kept up there !!

Maybe the solution would have been for Banksy to do the memorial, then any defacement of it could just have been considered an act of 'interacting with the artwork'..

Hi. Thanks all. I actually didn't say anywhere in the piece that "racists" did the vandalism. It was meant to be Stephen Lawrence 10 Years On: Did anything Change?
What a difference a title makes.

Come to your defence? Not this time I'm afraid.

You have asked for everything you're getting over there.

You need to read those comments and take them on board if you ever want to be a real politician, not just another lefty vandal lobbing (the same tired old) bricks at the right.

I particularly like:

"Third, the tone of the article is trying by extension to blame white people as a race for something that we have absolutely nothing to do with -- we're continually accused of things that we're just not guilty of and its starting to be more than just an irritant, its probably getting on more than a few persons' nerves. (Even I, a law abiding, peace loving sort, would be tempted to lob a half-brick if I was subjected to this day in, day out -- its not really about criminal damage but a sort of protest, a hint that maybe its time for some people to shut up and find something more constructive to do.)"

The best comment I came across was when I worked for an MP and we got a letter having a go at all the immigrants coming over and wrecking our culture and that if this continued she'd go and live in Spain. For some reason she didn't even mention whether she knew any Spanish!

Isn't it sad that so many racists come out of the woodwork to propose a solution not related to their own deportation?

Well you seem to have some good defenders there. Would happily publish a defence myself, but what I would like to say, i.e. there is an obvious difference between the desecration of the memorial and that of a local WHSmith, has already been said.
It also goes without saying that some of those leaving comments are attention-seeking loudmouths who are not on receive mode :/
